This kingfisher photography course/ workshop offers you the opportunity to watch and photograph kingfishers in their natural habitat.
The Kingfisher is without a doubt one of the most stunning birds in England but the only sighting many people ever get is an electric blue flash shooting away down the river. This course gives you the opportunity to watch and photograph them up close, an experience you will never forget.
This course/ workshop is set up to photograph this beautiful and secretive bird. My hide and perch are set up around half a kilometre away from their nest so as to avoid any disturbance. With good field craft the kingfisher will not even be aware of your presence and you will witness natural behaviour including fishing, courtship and preening.
I offer several options for this workshop:
Hide hire only: I will meet you, provide you with an induction, help set you up and then leave you to photograph for the day. You must agree to a strict set of rules so as not to disturb the kingfishers. Fee: £135 for full day (1 person), £175 (2 people).
Hide hire and tuition: On a 1:1 basis I will accompany you in the hide for three hours. I can help you get set up and provide advice and help with your photography. I’m also very familiar with the ecology and behaviour of these birds and will be able to assist you in getting the best shots. Fee: £200 for the session.
With all options patience is required. These are fully wild birds and therefore they may turn up once every hour or just once in the whole day. Bring a book and just enjoy watching river life pass by, other clients have photographed many other species from the hide including barn owl, kestrel, buzzard, water vole, otters, reed bunting, whitethroat and more. As these are fully wild birds there is no guarantee of seeing them, however on a very high percentage (97% in recent years!) of days they will be seen at the perch.

Testimonials: “Wow! What a fantastic experience! To be so close to such a fantastic bird in the wild was a truly amazing and to come away with such stunning pictures was the icing on the cake. I can’t wait to come back. Thank you for all your help and advice.” Andrew Ducat.
“The experience of sitting in the hide was extremely peaceful, and the male kingfisher kept showing up through the morning, providing great views and posing for the camera. It was the best view of a kingfisher I’ve ever had, and I’ve been searching for this for over 2 years! I’m already trying to book to go back! Thanks again.” Alastair Marsh
“A truly amazing experience being so close to such a beautiful bird – a chance in a lifetime and well worth the time and the money. Thankyou”. Colin Spalding
“We hired the kingfisher hide for the morning, fantastic experience, after waiting an hour suddenly one was there right in front of us, only a few feet away. We’re delighted with the photos and realised there is no way we would get anything like this without the hide. Thanks Jonathan”. Chloe Cox and Clive Hook
